Comprehensive Vaginosis Profile
Item # LC100091
Is your vaginal discomfort due to bacterial or yeast overgrowth?
The Comprehensive Vaginosis Profile measures important markers of vaginal health and helps distinguish between yeast or bacterial overgrowth as a possible source of vaginal discomfort.
The prevalence in the United States is estimated to be 21.2 million (29.2%) among women ages 14–49, 84% of which are asymptomatic cases (NHANES 2001–2004).
Bacterial constituents responsible for a bacterial vaginosis are capable of causing serious infections and the inflammatory condition known as vaginitis. Symptoms of vaginitis may be responsible for 10% of all visits by women to their healthcare practitioners. Although bacterial vaginosis is a major cause of infectious vaginitis, this health concern is often underestimated since many women with bacterial vaginosis are asymptomatic.
The markers contained in the Comprehensive Vaginosis Profile help distinguish between Yeast or Bacterial overgrowth as the cause of vaginal discomfort.
The Comprehensive Vaginosis Profile includes:
- Bacterial Vaginosis Score – An easy-to-interpret score that reflects the likelihood of vaginosis (based on gram stain microscopy findings).
- Gram Stain Microscopy – Specimens are carefully examined for the presence of the following:
- Lactobacilli, Curved Gram negative Rods, Small Gram Negative Rods, Yeast – determine presence of various microorganisms, Red Blood Cells (RBCs), White Blood Cells (WBCs), and Clue Cells. Additional findings may be reported.
WBCs help indicate the degree of vaginal inflammation. Eosinophils are reported & Wrights stain performed when WBCs > 6. - Clue Cells are epithelial cells coated with bacteria. Their presence is strongly suggestive of vaginosis.
- Yeast and Bacteriology Culture - Samples are cultured for yeast, dysbiotic bacteria, as well as normal vaginal bacteria (Lactobacillus spp).
- Sensitivity Testing to cultured microorganisms to determine microorganism susceptibility to therapeutic interventions.
This test kit contains a simple self-collection swab for convenient at-home collection.
